Powerful Questions

Powerful Questions

Powerful questions are a tool of Appreciative Inquiry and their structure aligns with Simon Sinek’s work. More powerful questions tend to start with ‘why’, ‘what (what if)’ and ‘how (how come)’, while less powerful questions include ‘who’, ‘when’ and ‘where’. The least powerful questions start with ‘did’, ‘can’, ‘will’ and ‘which’ as well as other yes/no questions. In our work, we find ‘who’, ‘where’ and ‘when’ are also very powerful questions. This is because who is involved in making decisions shapes those decisions and so too does where and when the decision making takes place.

We respect ngā iwi taketake, and acknowledge translations of te reo Māori versions of He Whakaputanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi as foundational documents of Aotearoa New Zealand. These documents and direct engagement with local Māori guide our commitment to partnership, protection, participation and allyship in all our work.
